Bye Bye My Dear Tortoises

LK and I bought a pair of tortoise shortly after we got married and moved to our home. The tortoises were bought just a few weeks apart, thus the older one was just very very slightly bigger. But check out their size difference now.
Waiting to be free

We never really named them. We just called them Ah-Oh and Ah-Kui (Oh Kui = tortoise in Hokkien).

Initially, their home was a nice ceramic bowl. With rocks and artificial trees…but they (or one of them) got real big so we upgraded to a large plastic container (not the one above). But eventually, even that got too small for them.

Then we tried letting roam freely at our balcony, but they have a habit of hiding in small & narrow places. Once one of them got stuck between the balcony’s stationary door and the wall. We had to dig the fella out with a stick. I was so afraid that the shell will crack.

Now we don’t let them out of the container anymore..coz afraid of “accidents”. Also, they tend to poo all over the place when we let them out.

But one of them is getting so big now. I feel sorry to have him cooped up in the plastic container. They are also getting quite good with their escaping act.

The main problem is, Bryan is quite intrigued by them and tries to hold them whenever he has a chance. Sometimes, mid way while Bryan is playing at the living room, he would remember the tortoises and he’ll look for them at the balcony.

It is quite “dangerous” as the tortoises are quite big now, and they may bite him. So far we always manage to catch Bryan before he could catch them.

So I think it’s time to let them go. Initially, we tot of letting #1 go first coz it is quite big already. But hubb felt that #2 will feel lonely with #1 gone, so we shd let them go together.

So we took them to a nearby lake and let them go there. It is a lovely lake with lots of people frequenting the place to feed the fishes & tortoises there. Yes, there are other tortoises around as well. I think it will be a nice new home for them.

Let’s hope and pray that they will be safe and happy there. God please watch over them ok. Let them have plenty of food, stay healthy and don’t get into any trouble.

Yahor..good idea oso so that i can recognise them next time. But then hor, maybe the additional signs will impact their chance to kau kuai-lui or kuai chai leh. Afterall, there are so many potential partners in the lake…kekeke.
