Breastfeeding is for the uneducated???

I have received my share of negativity regarding breastfeeding. Any mothers who had breastfed their babies extensively would have at some point.

But this one is a new one to me!

At my mom’s place, there are many aunties babysitting their grandchildren or other babies. So one common topic when the neighbors met up is to talk about the babies. Many of the neighbours knew that my son is a breastfed baby. In fact he is the only baby that was breastfed beyond 6 months. The other baby that I knew off was exclusively bf up to 2 months, and then mixed feeding until 6 months. The mother is a school teacher.

Yesterday, my mom met up with a neighbor who lived in a different floor.

Neighbor: So is he (Bryan) still breastfed?
Mom: Yeah, but only at night.
Neighbor: Aiyo, so BIG oredi still breastfed. My daughter don’t even breastfeed her baby during her confinement. She pumped and throw it all away.
Mom: What a waste….
Neighbor: No la. It’s like that one; all the EDUCATED youngsters don’t breastfeed their babies one.
Mom: (Smile and keep quiet)

When my mom related this to me:

Me: Mom, you should just tell her that your daughter never complete her high school education and so my salary is very very low and I cannot afford to buy formula for my son. That is why I am still breastfeeding because I have no money.
Mom: Aiyah, why argue with this type of UNEDUCATED people. Breastmilk is the best, some more so proud to throw it away. Pity the poor baby.

Looks like my brainwashing efforts on my mom have finally paid off. :-D

  1. Sighhhhhhhhhhhhh…. why do these aunties think BM is useless??? WHY WHY WHY????????? It’s the bestest and the mostest in term of nutrients, dha, etc etc.

  3. Yeah, the uneducated one is she and her daughter….la. I agree with Angleyes too.

    Such a waste to pump and throw the first month milk! ! If you cant breastfeed the subsequent months … you can find some excuses to give but its like punishing your baby if you throw it away… I can’t imagine that!

  8. yeah the uneducated one is her and the dotter lah!

    I think of lot of these people grew up in the 70s era where formula was like ‘in thing’ so they never really know the goodness of mother’s milk.

    My mom is also another one so I gave up talking to her. She still thinks bf is very ‘low’ so I don’t argue with her as long as she don’t interfere with me bfg Darrius.
