Lunas Peking Duck & Pan Mee

Warning…yummy food photos ahead…kekeke

Last week, my colleagues and I took a gourmet trip to Kulim for lunch. Before some of you gawk and say “HUH? Go all the way to Kulim for lunch??? No need to work meh?”

Yeah, we really no need to work. I have a few days of leave that will be forfeited by the end of the year, so I took a day off on Wednesday. My colleagues did the same.

We met up at late morning and starts the 45 minute journey to Kulim Kedah.

Our first stop…Lunas duck. And nope, this is not THE Lunas duck shop that most people have been to or have heard about. That Lunas duck shop that most people know about is Tan Kee. I have tried it before and it was nothing to shout about.

We went to a quaint little shop about a junction away from Tan Kee …Restaurant Hun Tai for Peking Duck!

Check out the rows of Peking duck welcoming us into the shop.

The duck is deep fried just before serving so that it is hot and the skin is just mmm..mmm…crispy!

How crispy? Just take a look at the photo below and be the judge.

Usually roast duck is usually very fatty and oily. But this one is not. It is pretty lean and the skin is just so crispy. However, the duck is best eaten at the shop. I bought a duck home for dinner and it just did not taste as good. One thing is the skin is no longer crispy. I roasted it in the oven but that resulted in the meat being a little dry. So don’t tah pau…just eat there!

And the uniqueness about this shop is they also sell Pan Mee. So we had Pan Mee and Peking Duck. :) :)

Like most Pan Mee shop, there is a choice of dry or soup pan mee. What is unique about this pan mee is that it is served with crispy fried fish cake on top.

The taste of the Pan Mee is different from the ones I have had before but I still prefer the Bukit Jambul Pan Mee over this one.

And to eat duck with Pan Mee….err…a little unusual. I think for the next trip (i’m sure there’s gonna be one), I will probably have duck with rice. And oh yes, they also sell Kiam Chai Boey, but we did not order that. I am sure that it will go very well with rice next time.

Since we came all the way to Kulim, we are not about to leave with just a regular lunch. Look out for our next stop in my next post!

  8. The deep fried fish cake on the pan mee is really unique, however i agree with Shooi that the one in BJ area is still better. Maybe i should recommend to the BJ pan mee owner, but at their current capacity … i dont think its necessary. If aint broken, dont fix it! Hahahaha
