Yesterday marked another first. I spent my first night “alone” with my 2 boys. My parents went back to my dad’s hometown in K.Kangsar for a wedding dinner. With my husband not around, I am not comfortable to manage both kids on my own. So my sis came to help me babysit during the day.
Luckily she came. Otherwise, I think I will have a hard time managing both my kids by myself.
She left when it was the boys bedtime, as soon as I take both boys upstairs. From then onwards, it is just me. I have no idea what time my parents came home and honestly it didn’t really matter to me. They sleep in the bedroom downstairs and wouldn’t hear my kids or me cry.
I want to know if I can make it through the night myself. How tricky could it get, right? Just make sure that both boys get their sleep and I get mine.
How did it go?
We all shared Bryan’s queen sized mattress instead of my king sized bed – because I was afraid of one of the boys falling off the bed. It is much safer on Bryan’s bed as one side of the bed is against the wall, and I will sleep on outer side. Plus, Bryan’s mattress is on the floor instead of on a bed frame.
I nursed Dylan to sleep lying down while I told made-up story (ONE STORY) to Bryan, sang him some songs and pat him to sleep. In fact, it was easier getting Bryan to sleep than Dylan. Dylan on the other hand, was making noises and it tempted Bryan sometimes to “kacau” him. Bryan will ask, “Didi chiang senmo? (What did didi say)” or he will go and shower Dylan with kisses.
Once Bryan falls asleep, I moved him inner towards the wall, and placed a huge bolster between him and Dylan for protection. Then I continued to cuddle Dylan to sleep.
I have no idea how long it took for Dylan to fall asleep as well, as I had fallen asleep myself later on. But I woke up many times through the night – pat Bryan back to sleep when he wakes up, help him when he needs to wee, nursed Dylan when he wakes up, or just wake up because my sleeping position is uncomfortable or because Dylan makes so much noise.
Sometimes Bryan will wake up and look at me just to make sure that I am still around.
I tried to get Bryan to sleep in the vertical position on the mattress so that we have more space between us but he refused. He want to sleep in his usual position. So he occupied his usual half of the bed + 1 bolster in middle resulting in less than half a bed for Dylan and I. Dylan sleeps all sprawled out, so I only have a tiny space left. I can even sleep flat. I need to sleep sideways. And Dylan is such a noisy sleeper. I keep waking up and offering my Mcboobs to him so that he would keep quiet and not wake Bryan up, only to find that he is still sleeping.
But looking back, it was better than I had expected. The boys slept peacefully together and I get all warm and fuzzy watching both of them asleep when I woke up this morning. It went quite well last night as Bryan has really accepted his lil brother and he was very happy to have his brother in his bed.
Given yesterday night’s mediocre success, I am now motivated to move both boys to the same room and I will just sleep with them until they are ready (and safe) to sleep on their own.
Will have to shop for a King sized mattress when daddy gets back.
